The Allegheny County District Attorney Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested two McKees Rocks men this morning in a heroin bust that netted 350 stamp bags of suspected heroin as well as about 70 grams of suspected raw heroin — enough to package into 10,000 bags, the DA’s spokesman said.
Police took into custody Andre Woods, who turns 45 today, and Damany Hayes, 30, who live at 312 Shingiss St., where the warrant was executed.
Charges are being prepared against both of them, said Mike Manko, spokesman for District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr.
None of the packaged heroin was marked with any of the labels that have been linked to as many as 22 fatal overdoses in Western Pennsylvania this month caused by heroin laced with fentanyl, a powerful painkiller.
But police were alerted to the drug operation earlier this week after interviewing a person who had overdosed after taking heroin marked “Theraflu,” one of the stamp bags containing heroin and fentanyl.
Detectives set up undercover drug purchases, leading to the execution of the search warrant.
The seized heroin must be tested in a laboratory to determine whether it contains fentanyl.
Police also recovered two weapons, a small amount of cash and suspected marijuana.
Participating in the investigation were the McKees Rocks, Stowe, Swissvale and North Versailles police departments along with the Pennsylvania State Police.
